Review: Invisibility by David Levithan and Andrea Cremer

Invisibility
Stephen is used to invisibility. He was born that way. Invisible. Cursed.
Elizabeth sometimes wishes for invisibility. When you’re invisible, no one can hurt you. So when her mother decides to move the family to New York City, Elizabeth is thrilled. It’s easy to blend in there.
Then Stephen and Elizabeth meet. To Stephen’s amazement, she can see him. And to Elizabeth’s amazement, she wants him to be able to see her—all of her. But as the two become closer, an invisible world gets in their way—a world of grudges and misfortunes, spells and curses. And once they’re thrust into this world, Elizabeth and Stephen must decide how deep they’re going to go—because the answer could mean the difference between love and death.

Until now I have never been particularly impressed by David Levithan's writing, and I haven't read anything by Andrea Cremer before this book, however the premise was so fantastic and I just couldn't not request this book. I was thoroughly impressed and honestly I am so glad I read this book, I devoured it in one sitting and I so wish there was going to be a sequel, because that ending, whilst working very well and being absolutely perfect for this book just did not fulfill me! I want more!

I think that what I really enjoyed about this book is that it's pretty simple. I put this down to the fact that Stephen is invisible so has no friends and Elizabeth is new in town so knows pretty much nobody. This means that the only characters we meet are characters that are key to Stephen's story so every single paragraph feels important in the book. Each of the characters also feels real, and reading both Stephen and Elizabeth's narration is great because you can see them both grow as people as well. I also really enjoyed reading Millie and Laurie, two of the supporting characters who both added a sense of humour and fun to the book.

I could go on and on about what I really liked about this book, but I can only think of one flaw. I struggled to get on board with Stephen and Elizabeth as a couple to start with, this is because I put Stephen's feelings down to the fact that this one girl could see him so it could be attachment due to that. It just seemed to quick for me, this all consuming love that they have for each other after a few weeks - granted, it's better than the insta-love in most YA books which happens in a few days, but still it took me a while to come to terms with the romance.

Both writers have very distinct writing styles which weave together so well, this book was an absolute joy to read and I think i may give more books by these authors a shot now.

Overall, Invisibility was a stunning yet simple book despite some issues with the romance. I found that I was gripped more by every page and I really would love to read more about the characters. Cremer and Levithan work very well together, I really enjoyed this book!

  1. I'm curious about this one. I love the premise, but I don't know if it's for me. I loved one of Cremer's works, but dual books hardly work for me.

  2. I didn't even register this book was partly written my Levithan. I quite like his works so now I'm even more interested in this book. Will have to get to it soon. :)
    Glad you enjoyed it!
