Review: Dark Eyes by William Richter

Dark EyesWally was adopted from a Russian orphanage as a child and grew up in a wealthy New York City family. At fifteen, her obsessive need to rebel led her to life on the streets.

Now the sixteen-year-old is beautiful and hardened, and she's just stumbled across the possibility of discovering who she really is. She'll stop at nothing to find her birth mother before Klesko - her darkeyed father - finds her. Because Klesko will stop at nothing to reclaim the fortune Wally's mother stole from him long ago. Even if that means murdering his own blood. But Wally's had her own killer training, and she's hungry for justice.

I was original drawn to Dark Eyes by how different it is to YA books that we tend to see these days. This book has no monsters, no overdramatic romantic storylines and a hell of a lot of action, and I mean real action.

This book is compared to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but I don't see the similarities, aside form the action and the mystery and the kick-ass heroine. Sure, I think YA fans of The Millennium Trilogy but I think that's just the genre rather than the content. I did really enjoy the book, the action and the pacing and the writing were pretty much perfect and I just absolutely loved Wally, she was amazing.

I think that Wally deserves her own paragraph. I loved her, she was the perfect protagonist. though at times I didn't understand why she had given up a perfect life for life on the streets,  I loved the person that she was. She was strong and street-wise, she led her group of street-kids and they respected her. I loved how she was strong and determined and yet she still mourned when she lost somebody that she cared about and she still had times where she was unsure, yet she always got herself up and got on with things. I also liked her group, especially Jake since he didn't just follow her plans like everyone else did, he questioned Wally's motives.

The storyline was very twisty/turny. I never even knew what was coming... I never even had any ideas! I was thrown off at the very end and totally fooled! That twist completely got me! The pacing was pretty much perfect though there were a few times that it started to drop.

Overall, aside from doubting Wally's decisions at times I can't say much about this book. It was a little slow at times but for the most part I really enjoyed it.

Review: Red Heart Tattoo by Lurlene McDaniel

Red Heart TattooAt 7:45 a.m. on the day before Thanksgiving break, a bomb goes off at Edison High. Nine people die instantly. Fifteen are critically injured. Twenty-two suffer less severe injuries. And one is blinded. Those who survive, struggle to cope with the loss and destruction. All must find new meaning for their lives as a result of something they may never understand.

I had deliberately avoided reading anything by Lurlene McDaniel until I saw the synopsis for Red Heart Tattoo, the premise was so meaningful. This book has kind of changed my thoughts about Lurlene McDaniel's books, I wouldn't go out of my way to read something by this author but I may consider accepting her books for review.

The reason that I wanted to avoid this author's works is because I've heard that it's just overwrought drama and to be honest it kind of is. You have so many dramatic teen storylines coming from all directions and I never really felt too much for the characters. Morgan and Trent are portrayed as the perfect couple, but they can't be perfect if Morgan is crushing on the school badboy. Kellie and Mark have their on very dramatic storyline but we really nevre get to know either of them so I didn't really care. The only drama in this book that really appealed to me as the development of Roth and Morgan's relationship (even though I was annoyed at the speed of that, since Morgan had only just lost her boyfriend...) and finding out who the bomber was.

Which kind of brings me to the next point. I was expecting the bomber to be somebody we know, somebody we meet throughout the pages but what we get is unexpected, it annoyed me and kind of made it a bit of an anti-climax. I also was annoyed that the book spent so long developing Morgan and Roth's relationship just to let it end the way it did.

But despite my (many) grievances with this book, for some reason I just could not put it down. I was gripped by the mystery and the emotion in this book and before long I had reached the end. I won't say I was moved, but the issues covered in this book are done delicately and meaningfully and if you are a fan of uber amounts of drama I would recommend this. Even I can't say I really disliked this book...

Review: Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel

Infinite Days (Vampire Queen, #1)For 500 years Lenah Beaudonte has been a vampire. 500 years of seduction, blood and destruction. But she is sickened by her dark powers and longs to feel the sun on her skin, grass under her bare feet, and share the breath of a human kiss.
She wants to be mortal again.

But is she really capable of being human, after her long years of darkness? Waking up as a sixteen-year-old girl brings Lenah many things the life she has missed, taste, touch, love. But a vampire soul is not easily shed. And her coven of four vampires she led in decadence and thrilling destruction want their queen back...

It took me a very long time to like this book, I mean it. I picked it up a few months ago and ended up putting it down because I couldn't get hooked. I tried again last week after I got the sequel for review and couldn't get into it for a long time. I don't think that I was ever completely hooked by this book since it took my five days to plow through. I'll admit that this book was good enough by the end to make me want to read the sequel but it took it's sweet time getting to that point. Just saying.

Okay, let me point out the one MASSIVE thing that annoyed me about this book. Lenah is this 600 year vampire that has been in hibernation for like, 100 years and when she wakes up she's human. So far, so good... BUT when Lenah wakes up and starts to go about her life as a normal sixteen year old girl she gets on with it so easily, surely you'd expect her to be amazingly  confused by like, how people talk and the newfangled contraptions, right? Nah, our Lenah (who by the way is awesome in everything and is flawless) gets right in there, using words like digital and stuff, it just didn't work for me.

I liked some of the other characters. I especially liked Tony who, although being kind of close to stalker at some points is loyal and sweet and I think Lenah should so have picked him over popular and hot but completely boring Justin, with whom there was zilch chemistry. I also liked Rhode, or what Lenah remembers of him, he seems absolutely amazing! I also really enjoyed the Rhode/Lenah romance aspect. Vampire/human relationships always freak me out, since Lenah is like 600 years old...

I have to admit that the flashback parts of this book engaged me WAYYY more than the parts set in the present, and the best parts are the bits where things actually happen. I liked the bit at the end where Lenah's old coven come to track her down, I found that I was gripped at those parts and I hated the cliffhanger, it's definitely made me want to read the sequel (which i have TBR).

Overall, despite a slow start and a main character that I just couldn't stand I did actually enjoy the premise. Apparently Lenah sorts herself out in the sequel and the romance becomes more realistic so I will be reading the sequel. The ending gripped me and so I'm blaming the low rating of this book on a first book world building syndrome.

Bout of Books Read-A-Thon Days #4 and #5 (Thurdsay/Friday)

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon

I didn't do a post yesterday since I had an extremely busy day due to celebrating good exam results and getting into university, so I did absolutely no reading.

Since I didn't read at all on day #4 (Thursday), the updates below are for Day #5 (Friday_

Here's what I read:

Letterbox Love (18/8/2012) + Week in Review

Letterbox Love is a UK based alternative to the popular US In My Mailbox meme and a fun way for British (and non-British) bloggers to share the fab books we may have got this week.

Hey guys, guess what?!

I got my A-Level results and they were AWESOME (AAB) so I'm into my dream uni the University of York! So excited :) It has been an AMAZING week for me personally but I haven't had many books through, which I'm glad for since I haven't done much reading :)

For Review:

MetaWars: Fight for the Future Rage Within (Dark Inside, #2) Book cover

PRINT:

Rage Within (Dark Inside #2) by Jeyn Roberts (Panmacmillan, 30th August 2012)
The Wolf Princess by Cathryn Constable (Chicken House, 4th October 2012)

I haven't heart much about METAWARS but it looks pretty sci-fi and middle grade for boys, which I do really like reading, maybe a bit like INSIGNIA by SJ Kincaid? RAGE WITHIN I am so excited to read since I loved DARK INSIDE. THE WOLF PRINCESS is one that I got unsolicited but looks very fairy-tale so I will be reading this one for sure!

EBOOK:

Diverse Energies Dearly, Beloved (Gone With the Respiration, #2) Shadows (Ashes Trilogy, #2)

Diverse Energies (Anthology) by Various (Lee & Low, October 1st 2012)
Dearly, Beloved (Dearly #2) by Lia Habel (Del Ray, September 25th 2012)
Shadows (Ashes #2) by Ilsa J. Bick (Egmont, September 25th 2012)

DIVERSE ENERGIES is an anthology of speculative fiction from some awesome authors like Cindy Pon and Malinda Lo, so i can't wait to read it. DEARLY, BELOVED is one I look forward to reading since I enjoyed DEARLY, DEPARTED last year and I am dubios about SHADOWS since me and ASHES didn't really get along amazingly well, but I still want to give it a shot.

I also got Samplers of The Archived by Victoria Schwab and Days of Blood and Shadow by Laini Taylor.

BOUGHT:

Earth Girl

I couldn't resist this. A good spacey futuristic that sounds a-ma-zing!
